Woman Delivers Her Own Child By Roadside While Her Children Waited In The Car

She said that she knew the process and it made the delivery easier.

A mother gave birth to her child on her own while her five children waited in the car.

Heather Skaats, from Kentucky, gave birth on the roadside three weeks before her due date, on 13th May. She told TODAY, "I was having light contractions before we left, so I figured I had time to run an errand." She believed that the time during labor would be longer as her deliveries with the other children—Kaelynn, 13, Aneleigh, 11, Austin, 6, Luke, 3, and Alyssa, 2—had taken a very long time.

She said, "I thought I wouldn’t have a baby in my arms until eight or ten hours later." Skaats' contractions suddenly became stronger and closer together, indicating that labor had begun. Skaats stated that she began driving faster in the hopes of having a home water birth as planned. However, it soon became evident that there wouldn't be enough time.

Skaats said, "I pulled over—assured the kids that everything was OK—and then I grabbed my phone and got out of the van." She added, "Got out of the car, went to the other side in the grass and literally had a baby. It was so quick! I only thought these things happened in movies!" per Mouths of Mums.

She further said, "I put my hand down there and his head started coming out with his body. I didn’t even have to push. It was so quick. I was on the phone with my husband, Nick, and 20 seconds later, I was like, ‘He’s here!’" She then proceeded to drive home with the child still attached to her body. She said, "I wrapped him in a blanket and drove with him close to my chest. I think the kids were in shock. They were pretty quiet."

She talked of the moment when she gave birth, "He started crying right away, and he just opened his eyes and looked at me and I said, ‘Yeah, buddy that was fun, huh?’" Skaats delivered her placenta in the shower with the aid of her 13-year-old daughter, Kaelynn, once they arrived at the house. Skaat's midwives reached in 10 minutes.

She said, "I think having home births in the past sort of taught me to trust my body." She has given birth to six children before this and said that, "Knowing the process really helped." Skaats and her husband also had a daughter named Leilah, who died of cancer when she was four years old, in 2016.

Skaats and her husband are currently brainstorming names for their new addition to the family. They're thinking about naming him Porter or Wolf, after streets near where he was born.
