The Release Date of Hocus Pocus 2, the Much Awaited Sequel of 1993 Original, Has Been Announced

The sequel will feature most of the original cast in the main roles.

During the company's presentation on Tuesday, Disney revealed that Hocus Pocus 2 will be available on Disney+ on September 30. This is a much-awaited follow-up to the 1993 original that starred Bette Midler, 76, Kathy Najimy, 65, and Sarah Jessica Parker, 57.

Attendees also received a preview of the film, which featured the three stars covering Elton John's "The Bitch Is Back." It also contained an appearance by a zombie with a golden heart Billy Butcherson played by Doug Jones who is continuing his role from the first movie. New characters were also introduced in the clip, including the mayor of Salem, Massachusetts played by Tony Hale, another portrayed by Sam Richardson, and two girls lighting the renowned Black Flame Candle, reports PEOPLE.

In a January Instagram post, producer Adam Shankman stated that production on the sequel, directed by Anne Fletcher, had concluded. He wrote in the caption, "Coming to you #halloween #2022 on @disneyplus."

The story will begin nearly 30 years after Max (Omri Katz) mistakenly revived three witches, Winifred, Mary, and Sarah, on the quest for children in the 1993 film adaptation. Vinessa Shaw and Thora Birch also appeared in the movie. When Winifred (Midler), Sarah (Parker), and Mary (Najimy) return to Salem in the current time, they want vengeance. It's up to three high school kids who stir the enchantresses' fury to stop them in the sequel, per Entertainment Weekly.

Becca (Gossip Girl's Whitney Peak), Cassie (Dirt's Lilia Buckingham), and Izzy (American Horror Stories' Belissa Escobedo) are the three teenagers. Hale, 51, Richardson, 38, and Jones, 61, will all appear in the sequel, as will Hannah Waddingham, Juju Brener, Froy Gutierrez, Taylor Henderson, and Nina Kitchen.

According to a production insider who talked to PEOPLE in February, the returning actors acted as if no time had passed while filming the sequel. The source told the outlet, "Bette's energy is the same as when she starred in the original. If anything, she raises the stakes." They added, "All feel like it's about time [the sequel] happens and they wish they had done it sooner. The chemistry between the cast was still there." They further said, "Hocus Pocus fans will not be disappointed. All of their favorite characters from the first movie return and then some."

Director Anne Fletcher said in a statement, "I am beyond thrilled to be involved in the sequel to a film that is as beloved as Hocus Pocus. Fans around the world have embraced these characters and have made this film a Halloween tradition whose popularity continues to grow." She added, "How lucky am I to be back at Disney with these three extraordinarily talented ladies in the iconic roles they created, as well as our fabulous new additions to the cast?"
