Keith Urban and Nicole Kidman celebrated their 16th wedding anniversary on June 26, 2022. Kidman shared a rare picture of their wedding ceremony, showing them lighting a candle, reported PEOPLE. She captioned the post, "Sweet XVI ❤️ Remember this like it was yesterday. Forever 🕯❤️" Kidman and Urban have been together since 2006 and have had one of the longest relationships in Hollywood. They have two kids together, Sunday, 13, and Faith, 11. The Lion actor also has two children with ex-husband Tom Cruise: Isabella, 29, and Connor, 27. The two were married from 1990-2001.
Kidman and Urban met each other at the 2005 G'Day USA gala honoring Australians in Los Angeles. Urban recalls that he was smitten by Kidman as soon as he saw her, which he was hesitant to believe at first. “I'm like, ‘You didn't love me at first sight, you didn't notice me,’ and he's like, ‘Yes I did but I just didn't let on,’” Kidman recalled on Ellen in 2013, as per E! Online, “but we kind of met and then about four months later he called me.” In an earlier interview, Kidman told PEOPLE about how she fell in love with the Nashville-based singer. “It was pretty intense,” said the Big Little Lies actor. “I believed by that point he was the love of my life. Maybe that’s because I am deeply romantic, or I’m an actress, or I have strong faith as well, but I just believed, ‘Oh, okay, here he is.'”
The two have been ardent supporters of each other since then. They are both extremely prolific in their fields and always have someplace to be together. Whether it is the Academy Awards ceremony or the Grammys, they are always there for each other.
“He is divine, that's very much our life. They play guitar and dance and that's his pick-up truck,” Kidman told E! Online. “The great thing about being married to a musician...you have music in the house all the time. There is something very joyful about having music. Keith can play pretty much any instrument. He'll just play piano at 7 in the morning that's what we have, is breakfast around the piano and very much a part of our life.”
When they got married, Urban was still going through alcohol addiction and substance use issues. He had been to rehab many times, before making a final trip to the famous Betty Ford clinic in 2006, just months after he married Kidman. She called off the rest of her press tour for Fur: An Imaginary Portrait of Diane Arbus to lend him her full support. Remembering his experience, Urban said, “She's the one that I was searching for my whole life, and everything not only changed but had to change in me if I was gonna go that road.” He added, “It was like the ultimate fork in the road moment in my life, and it was literally like you either get this right now or you are never, ever gonna get it right. This is your one shot.”
Early on in their relationship, they had both decided that they would be public about what was going on in their lives. “You can try and hide it, smoke and mirrors and all, but then how do I visit every weekend?” Kidman said. “It's been a huge lesson for me too.” Speaking about how they have managed to keep it together for so long, Urban said, “Meeting Nic and falling in love with Nic and starting a relationship with Nic became—I realize now in hindsight—my sobriety. That was how I was able to keep it together.” Kidman accompanied him to the vocal surgery he had had to go through, which he recalls wasn't scary because Kidman and professionals were there to support him the whole time.
Speaking of the secret to their long marriage, Urban said, “We just work at it. We love each other and we work at it. It's beautiful work.”
