One of the strangers was, fortunately, a cop. Police are now looking for the toddler's relatives.
A Florida mother left her 2-year-old daughter at Miami’s Mercy Hospital on Tuesday with two strangers, according to police. The woman asked them if they could watch her daughter as she went to the bathroom. The North Miami mom also gave the stranger her daughter’s Social Security card before walking away. “You don’t have to do this,” an unidentified witness told the mother. "Leave me alone,” she said while exiting the hospital. 33-year-old Carolina Vizcarra has since been arrested and said that she wanted a better life for her child. One of the strangers she handed her child to turned out to be an off-duty plainclothes Miami cop. Many Twitter users were confused as to why the mother would leave the child in a hospital with strangers.
How on earth do you know she didn’t ask for help? And you’re seriously pulling a “kids these days”? She was trying to keep her child off the street. She thought the hospital was a safe place. Maybe have an ounce of empathy once in awhile.— ChaoticCalm (@ChaoticCalm3) October 14, 2021
“One of our Miami Police officers was in plain clothes attending to a family matter at a nearby hospital when he was approached by an unknown woman who had a toddler in hand and claimed that she wanted to go to the restroom and to please watch after this little girl,” said Miami Police spokesperson Kenia Fallat, according to WSVN. But the officer figured that something was not quite right. "She hands off the child to this unknown man. Luckily he was a police officer and what was going through his mind was, he went into police mode." She continued, “He went into officer mode, waiting for this unknown woman to come out of the actual restroom and she just vanished,” said Fallat. “We can say that medical personnel checked her out … The girl appears to be just fine. She’s a happy little girl, and what we want is to reunite her with her family,” Fallat added. At the time, the mother had disappeared and authorities were looking for her as well as the little girl's relatives. “We need to locate mom. We need to locate anyone, perhaps the woman who dropped her off, what was the person’s mental state?” said Fallat. “Why she did this? Right now we want to talk to her. There’s a lot that we still don’t know.” Miami police tweeted a photo of the girl, who is s currently in the care of the Department of Children and Families.

According to Cafe Mom, the mom was later arrested and officials are looking into the incident. It seems a family member did come forward but police are trying to verify the authenticity of the relationship first. As for the mom's reason for leaving her child with strangers at a hospital, she reportedly said, “It’s not like I just left her. It’s a hospital and I was worried for her. I was thinking, ‘I am about to sleep on the streets, but not her.'” Florida’s Safe Harbor law only protects parents who leave babies (up to 7 days old) in a designated safe space. It’s unclear who will eventually gain custody of Vizcarra’s daughter. The mother has been charged with child abandonment and was taken to jail and held on a $5,000 bond. She was brought to court on October 13, Fox 13 reported.
Police are requesting that anyone with information on the child’s family call 305-603-6300.
