Mom Forced To Stab Family Dogs After They Attacked Her 1YO Daughter | “It Was Either Him Or My Daughter”

The dogs belonged to the child's grandmother who had had them since they were puppies.

A mother had to take a heartbreaking step to save the life of her one-year-old daughter as she was being attacked by the family's dogs.

Jamie Morales from Pico Rivera, California saw that their three-year-old pit bull was tackling her child, Ruby. Moments later, the second pit bull, reportedly of the same age, also joined and started attacking the baby. All the family members tried to separate the dogs from the child but were unsuccessful. Morales grabbed a knife and decided to save her little daughter by stabbing both the dogs. One of the pit bulls died while she suffered facial injuries from the incident.

Ruby's grandmother, Margaret Morales spoke to ABC7, "I walked into the kitchen and that's when I (saw)...my two daughters and my son on the floor trying to get the dogs off. Finally, my daughter got up...and that's when I (saw) my granddaughter." She added, "I (saw) the dog was latched on her left leg. That's when I had to actually get my hand into his jaws and open them up and that's when he released her." Margaret also spoke to KTLA and said, "He had her by the leg and I had to get his teeth off of her. He bit my hand and my hand's pretty severely cut open."

Morales spoke to the outlet, "I had to stab the dog … I had to. It was either him or my daughter and I chose my daughter." When the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department arrived on the scene, they said that the pit bulls attacked Ruby when she began to cry. Margaret has had the dogs, who were born from the same litter, since they were puppies, according to NBC Los Angeles. They had just been let in the house after having a bath, when the pit bulls attacked the baby. "I did whatever I had to do to protect my daughter, because he wouldn't let go of my daughter, so I had to. I feel really bad, but I had to," Morales said. "I thought my daughter was going to die."

Apart from the mother and grandmother, the child's aunt has also been injured. Little Ruby had to receive stitches and undergo a surgery after she was taken to the hospital. Pico Rivera Mayor Monica Sanchez said in a statement, "Like many others this morning I was horrified and dismayed at the news of the unprovoked attack on a one year child by a family's pit bulls." She added, "I'd like to extend our deepest condolences to the family and best wishes for a swift recovery for the child and injured members of the family."

The pit bulls have never shown aggressive behavior before this incident. The dog that survived will be taken to animal control and euthanized.
