DeVito and Perlman played Matilda's parents, Harry and Zinnia Wormwood in the 1996 film.
Matilda is a popular 1996 movie based on British author Roald Dahl's novel that was released in 1988. The story follows a bright young girl who has an awful family that mistreats her. Over the years, she realizes that she actually has powers verging on the realm of magic! Matilda is a beloved character and although her parents were terribly, in real life the actors who played them were nothing short of wonderful. In 1996, Danny DeVito adapted the book into a feature film starring 9-year-old Mara Wilson as Matilda. Devito and Rhea Perlman played Matilda's parents, Harry and Zinnia Wormwood in the 1996 film.

Wilson had previously appeared in Mrs. Doubtfire and Miracle on 34th Street and quickly became popular for her talent. But the youngster back then was going through a really hard time. Wilson reflected on Matilda for the film's 25th anniversary where she opened up about the strong bond she formed with DeVito, telling ET Online she "immediately felt a connection with him." Wilson's mother was battling breast cancer while the movie was being filmed. Heartbreaking she died 4 months before it premiered. DeVito and his then-wife Perlman helped the youngster through some of the darkest days of her life.

Wilson admitted that filming helped kept her mind busy. "I think that it was probably the best thing that could've happened to me at that time, because it kept me away from worrying and it made me not focus on it. In fact, I realized later on, that they (DeVito and Pearlman) would be planning these fun weekends and things for me to do, and Danny and Rhea would take me to the theater to see a play, or to the movies or to just hang out at their house, things like that was all usually done when my mother was in the hospital. So it really did keep me distracted and it really did keep me happy and I had a lot of people on set who really loved me and really took care of me." The film was also credited to Wilson's late mother and that gesture meant everything to her. "I felt so glad when I saw that in the credits, and I still feel happy when I see that now," she revealed. "I'm so glad that they did that."

The now 34-year-old added, "I feel like Danny and I just kind of understood each other. I don't know what it was, but I immediately felt a connection with him, and I think that he was probably a lot like a lot of the other people in my family, just full of good stories and a good sense of humor, and very talkative and outgoing, but also very considerate," she explained. "He thought a lot about other people. He did a lot of humanitarian work and he really cared a lot about people. And you can tell, it came through. And the same was true of Rhea. She was always the consummate performer, but she had a truly wonderful heart."
