Paz's post-mortem report showed that she had been strangled to death. Local police spoke about Johnson and said, "He was interviewed and provided an alibi, which was subsequently proven to be false." As the investigation progressed, a witness informed detectives that "Johnson attempted to sell her Dodge Charger with the victim deceased in the back seat". Police further said that Johnson is expected to be booked in Nashville on the criminal homicide warrant "in the near future", reported the Daily Star.

The outlet further reported that the victim's daughter Kendall Smith, 18, told local news station WTVF that her mother would have "fought like hell" to get away from her killer. She added that she sensed something was wrong even before she was informed of her mother's death. "My brothers were left home alone since Wednesday night and they're like, 'mom isn't home'. Because they're 10 and 11 and can't be home alone for days on end," she explained, talking about what made her suspicious. Kendall told reporters that her mother was a single mother of four, with two sons and two daughters. The two boys, aged 10 and 11, were placed in foster care.

Paz had recently become a grandmother for the first time. Kendall spoke about her mother and said that she was "the life of the party" and always wanted to make people laugh.
She opened a GoFundMe page to help with Pamela’s funeral costs. "The police are working so hard to find the person the took my mother's life and we will get justice for her," she said, according to the Daily Star.
