The love story of actor Kirk Douglas and his wife Anne Buydens is one of a kind tale that is no less than an apt depiction of a long, loving dedicated journey together. The couple fell in love and completed six decades together through thick and thin. In a marriage of more than 60 years, there was one thing that the couple kept following consistently: writing letters.

However old-fashioned writing letters may be considered by many these days, heartfelt emotional writings are the purest tokens of expression. The renowned actor met Anne when he had just gotten out of his previous marriage with his first wife, Diana, and was in a relationship with Italian actress Pier Angeli.

The actor was on a trip with his then-girlfriend Angeli when he needed the help of a bilingual assistant. This was how he met Anne, who was the German-born assistant to film director John Huston. According to the Daily Mail, at the time Anne was still married to Albert Buydens, a Belgian, as he had helped her escape the Nazi invasion of Germany. Over time, Anne and Kirk became fond of each other's company and would often lend ears to each other. The comfort kickstarted their relationship and eventually led to Kirk breaking off his engagement with Angeli on Christmas Eve in 1953.

Soon, in May, of the following year, they were married to each other and deeply in love. After completing years together, the couple published a compilation of the letters they wrote to each other, titled, Kirk and Anne: Letters of Love, Laughter, and a Lifetime in Hollywood. The tradition of writing letters continued until their old days together. In an excerpt from the compilation, one of the most memorable letters was written by Kirk to Anne after they welcomed their first child.

"Always remember darling, I need you... for you, I hope to do wonderful things. This is it—you and me and our family forever," it read. In another letter, it almost feels like a manifestation by the actor, where he wrote, "If I live to be one hundred, there will still be so many things unsaid." Decades later, when he turned 100, he wrote to her describing how much he has to say about the love he has for her, growing every passing day.

The Oscar Award-winning actor died on February 5, 2020, at the age of 103. His son Michael Douglas announced his demise on his Instagram with a note of gratitude. Michael acknowledged his father’s glorious career and his commendable role as a father, a grandfather, a great-grandfather, and a wonderful husband to his wife.

Following his death, Anne departed on April 29, 2021, a week after she turned 102. Michael Douglas informed his fans and well-wishers about the same with a generational picture of the Douglas family.
