Kevin Costner is not just a successful actor, musician, and Academy Award-winning director. He is also a doting father to his seven children. Speaking to PEOPLE this month, The Bodyguard star revealed that "fatherhood is one of his greatest joys." The 67-year-old Costner and his wife Christine, 48—who have been together for the past 18 years—have three children together: sons Cayden (15) and Hayes (13), and daughter Grace (12). He is also a father to daughters Annie (38) and Lily (36), and sons Joe (34) and Liam (26), from previous relationships.

"You've got to get down on the ground and play with them," Costner told the outlet. "And you teach them to be independent and the sad part about that is they become that. I'm like any other parent and I'm trying to figure it out." Costner also shared that he loves spending time with his family when he is not working. "I work as a provider. I'm a father and I'm a husband, but the world doesn't revolve around me," he said. "When I'm not making a movie, I'm living and on the freeway with my wife, getting the kids to their stuff or I'm waiting for them to come out of a party. I'm just twiddling my thumbs. People have a wrong idea about how my life works."

Gushing about his children in June 2020, the A-list movie star said that his offsprings are just "normal" kids. Costner shared: "I'm really comfortable with my family. I'm really comfortable with my children. Our house is like a river: You've just got to get into the flow of it. And whatever you thought it was going to be, maybe it still can, but it's going to have to work with what the day brings."

Costner's teenage son Hayes will make a small appearance in the upcoming four-part western epic, Horizon, which is directed and produced by Costner himself. "He's very good. But I kind of did it on purpose, so he could be hanging out with me," the proud father said of his son. "But I kind of did it on purpose, so he could be hanging out with me. And the same thing for Cayden, the same thing for Grace. 'This is really neat. You should come to be with me.'"

His two eldest daughters, Annie and Lily—whom he shares with his ex-wife Cindy Silva—followed in their father's footsteps and started acting from a young age. His son with Silva, Joe Costner, has also starred alongside his father and older sisters in The Postman.
