'Father of The Bride' Star Steve Martin Embraced Fatherhood at The Age Of 67 | He's Happy He Waited

"I would have been a lousy father during my young days", the actor said when asked how it felt to be a father at the age of 67.

Ace actor and comedian Steve Martin has played the role of a father onscreen multiple times. However, it was at the age of 67 that Martin got the chance to embrace fatherhood in real life. The Pink Panther actor and his journalist wife journalist Anne Stringfield welcomed their first and only child, daughter Mary Martin to the world in 2012. Although the prospect of becoming a parent in their 60s might be terrifying to some, Martin has taken to the role splendidly. The 77-year-old actor believes that fatherhood is a "fantastic" role and that he became a father at the right time in his life.

In a conversation with Australia’s Daily Telegraph in 2016 about being a dad in his sixties, Martin said: "Oh, it's fantastic—you have all the time in the world. You're all set and secure in life, and you're not building your career, so you have a lot of time. When I was younger, I was selfish and focused on my career. Now I'm just hanging around the house playing with [my daughter]. It's great."

Martin met Stringfield in the mid-2000s by the virtue of their respective professions. The 50-year-old was reportedly working as a fact checker at the New Yorker and was assigned to check one of Martin's comedy pieces when they started talking.

The pair spoke over the telephone for over a year before they met for the first time. After dating for three years, they went ahead and got married in 2007. According to Rare, Martin kept the news of his engagement a surprise for his close friends.  He had invited his friends—including Tom Hanks, Eugene Levy, Carl Reiner, and Diane Keaton—for a party without giving them any hint that he was going to marry that day, according to USAToday30.

Five years after tying the knot, the couple welcomed their first child together and the Father of the Bride actor credits his wife for all the joy he's been blessed with in the years since meeting her. "It's going great because I have a wonderful wife and mother," Martin told David Letterman during an appearance on his show a few months after his baby girl's birth, according to CloserWeekly. During the interview, Martin also joked about naming his daughter "Conquistador."

"We've thought about the name quite a bit. Conquistador. What do you think? I didn't want to go with one of those Hollywood weird names. Conquistador is a statement," he said jokingly.

While talking to AARP magazine in 2007, the Only Murders in the Building actor put his experience with fatherhood into perspective by saying: "I think if I'd had a child earlier, I would have been a lousy father because I would have misplaced my attention on my career. I am very forthcoming with her, and it's great. She's giving me way more than I'm giving her."
