Demi Moore and Ashton Kutcher had a rocky marriage and the actress spoke of their dark phases through her book.
We love our partner so much that we are ready to change ourselves for them. We want them to be so comfortable with us that we sometimes forget our own likes and dislikes to accommodate theirs.
Demi Moore did exactly the same when she fell in love with Ashton Kutcher. The actress wanted to be the wife and girlfriend that he dreamt of. But in the long run, Kutcher disappointed her and cheated on her.
Demi Moore met Ashton Kutcher in 2003 through mutual friends at dinner when she was 41 and he, 25. However, the age gap did not stop the two from falling for each other. Soon, the two started dating, not paying heed to the people who criticized their relationship. Moore rubbed their remarks away labeling them as "silly."
Being with Kutcher made her feel younger and Moore loved it. It was a like "a do-over, like I could just go back in time and experience what it was like to be young, with him – much more so than I’d ever been able to experience it when I was actually in my twenties," stated the Moore in her memoir, Inside Out, according to Metro.
In September 2005, they decided to take their relationship to the next level and tied the knot. Moore felt she had found a "soulmate" in Kutcher and did everything she could to be the wife of his dreams. According to her she "went into contortions to try to fit the mold of the woman he wanted his wife to be," stated CheatSheet.
So Moore decided to put on the face of a "cool" wife for her young husband. However, her husband took advantage of her willingness to change her for him. According to Daily Mail, Kutcher first encouraged her to break her 20 year sobriety by telling her that he does not believe alcoholism is a real thing.
Next, Kutcher expressed his fantasy of having a threesome. Moore did not know how to respond to it other than to say yes. "I put him first, so when he expressed his fantasy of bringing a third person into our bed, I didn’t say no. I wanted to show him how great and fun I could be," recalled Moore, according to CheatSheet.
That was the tipping point of their relationship. Moore felt bad after the threesome and called it a mistake in her memoir. "They were good people, but it was still a mistake. I was strangely flooded with shame, I couldn’t shake the feeling that this whole thing was somehow my fault," wrote the 57-year-old actress, according to CheatSheet.
In spite of her attempts, Kutcher strayed away from the relationship. He betrayed her trust and used their threesome to justify his cheating. “Because we had brought in a third party into our relationship, Ashton said, that blurred the lines and, to some extent, justified what he’s done,” recalled Moore, according to People.
Helpless and still in love with her partner, she forgave him. But that was followed by more such cheating scandals. She discovered that he had an affair with a 21 year old woman. “I knew she wasn’t lying. He admitted it right away and I think my response was, “Are you f**king kidding me…?” I think I felt like I could barely take a breath," said the actress to Good Morning America, according to Metro.
That was the end of their relationship. On 11 November 2011, they parted ways. At the time, she released a statement saying, "As a woman, a mother and a wife, there are certain values and vows that I hold sacred, and it is in this spirit that I have chosen to move forward with my life."
Though Moore did not speak of these dark phases in their relationship at the time, she disclosed these secrets through her 2019 memoir. Looking back at her relationship, she told Good Morning America, "I lost me. I think the thing if I were to look back, I would say I blinded myself and I lost myself," according to People.
