The 'Clueless' fame actor's death remains a mystery till date.
Brittany Murphy, well known for her roles in hits like Clueless and Girl, Interrupted, saw her life come to a tragic end in 2009 when she met death at the young age of 32 at her home in Los Angeles. In the years following her demise, several rumors have surfaced about the mysteries surrounding her death and the shocking possibility that it may not have been natural. While it is reported that pneumonia and combined drug intoxication were the reasons behind her unforeseen death, suspicions continue to swirl to date.
Among those who sought to uncover the truth behind Murphy's death was her father, Angelo Bertolotti, who reportedly shared on his deathbed that he "lost hope" in ever finding answers.
The suspicions were driven in part by the fact that Murphy's husband, Simon Monjack, passed away in a similar manner a mere six months after the star's death. Speaking to ABC News at the time, Los Angeles County assistant chief coroner Ed Winter addressed rumors that toxic mold in the celebrity couple's house was to blame for their deaths. "It is unusual to have two people die of similar circumstances with pneumonia. We've been looking at it and saying, 'Something isn't right. I'm not saying you can't get pneumonia from mold, but we did all the tests on it—mold did not come up in the toxicology reports," he said.

Bertolotti—who died in 2019, 10 years after his daughter's death—allegedly spent all his money to uncover the truth about Murphy's demise. According to 9Honey, in an unearthed interview featured in the What Happened, Brittany Murphy? HBO Max documentary, Bertolotti revealed that he had been forced to give up the legal battle seeking answers about Murphy's death.
"I have no idea what happened, I wish I did. I think about my daughter a lot, think about the nice times we've had together. But I've lost hope. I still don't know who's responsible for her death—it makes me feel pretty, well, very bad. I thought I'd solved it, but I was getting a lot of publicity from it, and I had to back off from it," Bertolotti reportedly said, describing the profound sorrow of not knowing how his daughter passed away.
The two-part documentary released on HBO covered the star's glorious career in Hollywood in addition to addressing the mysteries and headlines surrounding her death. "The documentary presents an in-depth, intimate character portrait exploring the life and career and mysterious circumstances surrounding the tragic death of '90s actress and rising star, Brittany Murphy," HBO Max said in a statement when the project was first announced, reported Entertainment Tonight. "The series will go beyond the conspiracy theories and headlines, featuring new interviews by those closest to Brittany and new archival footage."
"I agreed to do this film because I think it's a shame that Brittany's promising life and career have been eclipsed by the circumstances of her death. I think it's important to celebrate Brittany's talent as we struggle to explain the tragic circumstances of her and Simon's deaths," director Cynthia Hill shared.
