Bindi Irwin Pays Tribute Her "Guardian Angel" Dad Steve Irwin 15 Years After His Death

The Crocodile Hunter died on September 4, 2006 at the age of 44.

Bindi Irwin honored her late father in an emotional series of photographs on Instagram. One sweet snap featured her baby girl Grace Warrior who is just 5 months old. Another included a picture of Bindi when she was young, alongside her dad Steve Irwin. The 23-year-old conservationist captioned the snaps: This sweetheart has been watching her ‘Grandpa Crocodile’ on the projector at our camp here on the Steve Irwin Wildlife Reserve. She lights up when she sees him on screen. I wish with all my heart that Dad could hug my beautiful girl. It’s been 15 years since he passed away. I hold on to the thought that he’s her guardian angel now, watching over the most special part of my life, Grace Warrior.

Grace has a special connection with her late granddad. Bindi previously said her daughter's nickname, Baby Wildlife Warrior, honored the Crocodile Hunter. She told The Bump, "My dad was the first person to create the term 'Wildlife Warrior.' Being a Wildlife Warrior means to stand up and speak for those who cannot speak for themselves." Bindi revealed her daughter's name soon after her birth and the meaning behind her name. At the time she wrote: March 25, 2021. Celebrating the two loves of my life. Happy first wedding anniversary to my sweetheart husband and day of birth to our beautiful daughter. ❤️ Grace Warrior Irwin Powell. Our graceful warrior is the most beautiful light. Grace is named after my great-grandmother, and relatives in Chandler’s family dating back to the 1700s. Her middle names, Warrior Irwin, are a tribute to my dad and his legacy as the most incredible Wildlife Warrior. Her last name is Powell and she already has such a kind soul just like her dad. There are no words to describe the infinite amount of love in our hearts for our sweet baby girl. She chose the perfect day to be born and we feel tremendously blessed.

The Irwin family often finds ways to celebrate the life and legacy of Steve Irwin, the world-renowned  Australian television personality and conservationist best known as the "Crocodile Hunter." Steve Irwin tragically passed away on September 4, 2006, at the age of 44. His heart was pierced by the barb of a stingray while filming at the Great Barrier Reef in Australia. His wife, Terri, and kids, Bindi and Robert, continue to carry on his work by running the Australia Zoo.

Bindi told Entertainment Tonight that her dad would have been a loving grandfather. "He would've been a good, good grandpa. Yeah, he really would've been," said the Crikey! It's the Irwins star in February. "I don't think we would've ever seen our daughter. He would've just whisked her away into the zoo and it would've been perfect." Bindi is grateful to cherish memories of her dad  that have been captured on film and hopes to pass them on to her daughter when she grows up.  "It is so nice that we'll be able to introduce her to her grandfather through all of the documentaries," she continued. "It's really special."
