6YO Girl Drowns In Her Neighbor's Pool After Stacking Chairs To Climb Over Locked Gate

The child's 5-year-old brother returned home to tell their mother what had happened.

A six-year-old girl, Za'myah Judge, who her family lovingly called Boo Boo, died on Saturday after entering an above-ground pool in her neighbor's backyard on S. Emerson Street. North Carolina detectives believe the child accessed the pool after climbing over a locked gate. They believe the young girl stacked several chairs against her next-door neighbor’s locked pool gate to climb over. Police say her younger brother who is five years old told investigators that he saw his sister enter the water and "that he ran for help after he did not see her re-surface."

Gastonia Police Department put out the following statement regarding the incident: Detectives from the Gastonia Police Department are investigating the June 11 drowning death of a six-year-old girl that occurred in a residential pool. There is no foul play suspected in the girl’s death. At approximately 4:29 p.m. on June 11, #GastoniaPD officers and Fire & Rescue personnel responded to a home on S. Emerson Street for the report of a possible drowning in a backyard above-ground pool. Family members pulled the six-year-old out of the water and attempted life-saving measures prior to first responders arriving. First responders who arrived at the home took over life-saving measures and transported the girl, identified as Za’myah Judge, to a local hospital. Judge was pronounced deceased at the hospital. Preliminary investigation by detectives indicates that Judge stacked several chairs against her next-door neighbor’s locked pool gate, climbed over the gate, and entered the water. Judge’s younger brother told investigators that he saw Judge enter the water and that he ran for help after he did not see her re-surface.

Christian Cash, identified as Za'myah's mom, said that she last saw her daughter earlier that afternoon, as the young girl finished eating lunch at their home. She never knew it was going to be their last ever interaction. Cash told WSOC-TV, “She said ‘Alright I’m done. I love you.’” The mother is beyond heartbroken over her daughter's death. “Why? Why? She still had her whole life ahead of her, she was 6 years old, she was pure, she was innocent.” In fact, when her son ran in to tell her what had happened, she was cleaning their home and preparing to take her children to a community pool. “No one will ever take her place and life will never be the same without her,” Cash said.
