6-Month-Old Baby Girl Orphaned After Mother Is Killed In A Car Crash Just 6 Months After Dad Dies

Kera Leskovec was a beloved Salem City Schools teacher who died while she was driving to work.

Unbelievable tragedy struck a family where a six-month-old baby ended up having to grow up without both her parents. The infant's mother Kera Leskovec was a teacher with Salem City Schools Junior and Senior High Schools in Ohio. She died in a car crash on her way to school. “It is with a heavy heart and great sadness that I must inform you of the passing of Mrs. Kera Leskovec, who was tragically killed in an automobile accident on her way to work this morning,” Superintendent Sean Kirkland wrote. “Kera was an extremely valued Jr/Sr High teacher and individual that will be greatly missed by her colleagues and students alike.” Kera had just dropped her baby girl off at her own mother’s house before the fatal crash, according to the Canton Repository.

The car of the 32-year-old resident of Randolph Township collided with that of Jonathan Walter, 28, who also passed away. Kera was hit head-on by the second vehicle that traveled into the left lane and quickly caught on fire. Both drivers were wearing their seatbelts. Kera was a recent mom after marrying Kevin J. Leskovec, a 2013 University of Mount Union graduate, in 2015. "She and her husband were both very outdoors people," Salem High School Principal Todd McLaughlin said. "They had horses. They loved horses and they liked the outdoors." McLaughlin remembered Kera as a "wonderful" teacher — who will "be greatly missed by her colleagues and students alike." "Mrs. Leskovec was a beloved teacher here. The kids really, really, really liked her," McLaughlin told the Canton Repository.  He asked that people "please keep her and her family in your thoughts and prayers. It's tragic. .... Any time you have a death, it's not easy. Kera was a wonderful person, and she's going to be missed here at Salem High School." Kera taught algebra, trigonometry and statistics, and math II to junior and senior high school students, grades 9 through 12. McLaughlin said she had been a teacher there since 2015.

Kera's husband Kevin passed away on August 20 at 31 years old due to COVID-19, according to his obituary. The Leskovecs' daughter, Avalee, was only four months old when he died. “I have truly been blessed to call Kevin a friend for 13 years and a husband for 6 years,” Leskovec shared in a public Facebook post three days after he died. “Words can’t express how much I will miss him. He left me with the greatest gift of all, sweet baby Avalee. She will grow up hearing amazing stories of her Dad, and I have no doubt she will know how much he loved her.”

Heartbreakingly, Avalee lost her mother just two months later.  A GoFundMe page has been created to raise money for funeral expenses, as well as continued care for Avalee.  “As sad as we are for her (mom’s) loss of life, we are saddened that their daughter Avalee will have to navigate life without her loving parents,” the GoFundMe for the family said.
