18-Year-Old Mom Throws Newborn Baby In Dumpster In New Mexico

The teen mother dumped the infant, hours after she unexpectedly gave birth in her bathroom.

In New Mexico, surveillance footage outside a store revealed a teen mother tossing a newborn into a dumpster. The baby boy was pulled back into safety six hours after the incident, reported Fox News. He was found by three people who were separating and picking trash. According to The New York Post, Alexis Avila, 18, was spotted going to the dumpster on North Thorp Street in Hobbs at 2 p.m. on Friday, pulling a black garbage bag out of the car and putting it into the container. As per the footage, the people who found the baby wrapped him up and a man can be seen calling the police upon this discovery.

Joe Imbriale, the owner of Rig Outfitters whose surveillance footage caught the act, spoke to Fox News. He said, "I got a call about 8:30 on Friday, and Hobbs PD said, 'Hey Joe are your cameras working out back?'" He initially assumed that someone had broken into the business. However, the footage showed a lady arriving in a white car at 2 p.m. She tossed a black bag into the dumpster and drove off. Hector Jasso, who discovered the infant, told police that he, his girlfriend, and another buddy were trash diving. They heard the sounds of cries coming from one of the bags. He initially thought that it was a kitten, however, he discovered the baby with the umbilical cord still attached, and called the police right away, per The New York Post. Police identified the other two rescuers as Michael Green and April Nuttall.

The police released a statement saying, "Upon arrival officers rendered aid to the newborn child and the baby was transported to a local hospital by Hobbs EMS. The child was subsequently transported to a Lubbock Hospital for further pediatric treatment." The child is completely safe and is in a stable condition. The authorities were able to trace Avila and went to her home. They spoke to her parents who said that she had been skipping school and work recently due to some stomach pains. Avila informed the investigators that she had been experiencing stomach pain and had even seen a doctor. The doctor confirmed on January 6 that she was pregnant.

She said that she gave birth to a child in her bathroom and did not even understand what was happening. She panicked, cut the umbilical cord, and wrapped the infant in a towel. She put the child in a trash bag and fastened it with a hair tie. She drove around for a while before dumping the newborn in a dumpster outside Rig Outfitters. The authorities wrote in her criminal documents, "When asking Alexis what she thought would eventually happen to the baby by placing him inside of a plastic bag and dumping him, Alexis remained silent and couldn’t answer. An indication Alexis was well aware the baby would have died as a result."

Her mother, Martha Avila told the authorities that she had no idea that her daughter was pregnant and thought she had only gained a little weight. The father of the child is Avila's ex-boyfriend whom she broke up with in August. Her mother revealed that he was of a violent nature and wasn't allowed in the house after he hit Avila in June. She has been charged with an attempt to murder. Imbriale spoke about the incident, "I was in shock just to see this. I can’t sleep at night just knowing that this baby was just tossed in a dumpster like that. I’m sorry but who does that? That is evil. I don’t have words for it."
